Dropkick Murphys, Blood for Blood, Ducky Boys: March 19, 2004 @ Soma
The Dropkick Murphys don't fool around, these Irish rockers get right to it, and by it, I mean rocking out. This pure Boston line up is enough to make any modern day leprechaun feel over his or her head, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.
The Ducky Boys proved themselves to be a decent opener, with some progression; this band could headline a tour. The Ducky Boys definitely appealed to their fans, although kids who hadn't heard them before were not too impressed. The fast in your face style start a good-sized pit, but it's hard to concentrate knowing you are going to see The Dropkick Murphys in an hour.
Blood for Blood was next, and with their hardcore image, they started rocking out. Their build-ups kept the pit going through all of their songs. The music was decent, nothing new, just fast and energetic. Although I am not a big fan of the band, the anti-MTV anti-conformist band still rocked out without a vengeance.
The almighty Dropkick Murphys graced us with their presence next, starting off with a little dance number then diving into "Worker's Song." After that "Boys on the Docks" was played, then nearly every song off of Blackout was performed. Darcy came out to sing The Dirty Glass, which was a treat. The energy was great and the pit was insane, a great night was in the making, and only half the set was over. "Curse of a Fallen Soul" threw the pit into frenzy, and then "Bastards on Parade" and "Good Rats" slowed it down a bit. The "Spicy McHaggis" jig got every girl up on stage, but was ironic since Spicy had already quit the band. They ended their set, only to encore with 'LETS GO MURPHYS!' Ringing in everyone's ears. They played everyone's favorite sing along, "Baroom Hero," and then ended "Skinhead on the MBTA." The girls came back out on stage as well as half the pit rushing to jump up and dance with their favorite band. The night was great, although more older songs could have been played. The fans were in good spirit (half of them drunk) and the band seemed to be having a good time, which made a the night memorable.
