Combining elements from their early days and more recent work, members of the hardcore punk rock band Pennywise meticulously created their seventh studio album, "From the Ashes" late last summer.
The album debuted at No. 54 on the Billboard 200 chart - a record for the veteran Southern California band. While the first single, "Yesterdays," got radio play, the band tried to make every song a worthy listen, guitarist Fletcher Dragge said. The album features fast-paced tracks, hopeful and positive cuts, high-energy crowd favorites and songs that question the U.S. government's foreign and domestic policies, including "God Save the USA."
In a Jan. 16 interview from his Hermosa Beach, Calif., home, Dragge said the key to the band's success and longevity is that each member has shaped its direction. Pennywise - which also includes singer Jim Lindberg, drummer Byron McMackin and bassist Randy Bradbury - will play Thursday at Hartford's Webster Theatre.
