Palms mines a great deal of inspiration from the literary and philosophical realm. In his lyric writing, Kensrue drew from sources as varied as the lectures of philosopher Alan Watts, the writings of Franciscan friar Richard Rohr, and the process metaphysics of mathematician Alfred North Whitehead. “In the past couple of years I’ve come to embrace a more non-dualistic way of looking at the world, partly because of listening to and reading things that broke me out of those black-and-white patterns,” front man Dustin Kensrue notes.
Co-produced by Thrice and Eric Palmquist and mixed by John Congleton, Palms encompasses everything from viscerally charged post-hardcore to piano-driven balladry.
Earlier this week, Thrice shared a visual component for “The Dark” which featured fan submitted video. During the album recording, Thrice invited fans to submit video of themselves singing the last chorus of “The Dark”. The audio was mixed into the song and the clips were used in the video for “The Dark”. Over 1000 submissions were received.
