Coupla Questions: IKARA COLT
What better way to spend a chilly night in New York City, than to heat things up with a hot Rock N' Roll show? I headed down to the Bowery Ballroom to watch British art-punk rockers Ikara Colt open up for Swedish tuff-rock chicks Sahara Hotnights. This first stop on their joint North American tour was crowded with New York hipsters, as well as members of the Rock N' Roll elite, like former Smashing Pumpkins members Melissa Auf Der Maur and James Iha (who I practically ran over on the way to the bathroom...then acted like a raging dork and asked for a photo with him).
I resisted the urge to slot Ikara Colt alongside the recent slew of garage rock bands, and came to the conclusion that their only similarity to this trend lies in lead singer Paul Resende's slight resemblance to Strokes crooner Julian Casablancas. After a super-charged performance, minus the keyboard because it was "too awkward to transport overseas," I had a chance to sit with the band and ask them a coupla questions.
Team Digital: This is the first night of your tour with Sahara Hotnights, what are you hoping to learn from them or hope they learn from you?
Ikara Colt: I dunno, we're pretty different bands. As long as we all encourage each other to play our best and put on good shows, that's what it's all about. There's no rivalry.
Team Digital: Your music is pretty different from most of the popular British bands out there right now like Coldplay, Travis, Starsailor etc. Did you make it a point sound different, or do you simply draw musical inspiration from other places?
Ikara Colt: We just don't come from that style of music. We don't get anything out of it. There are a lot of bands like that around, and we wanted to do something different.
Team Digital: The songs on your album 'Chat And Business' are full of energy. Listening to it makes me want to jump around and break stuff (not my own stuff of course, someone else's). What bands give you guys that same feeling?
Ikara Colt: Yeah Yeah Yeahs- we were touring with them, and they are really unique. 80's Matchbox B Line Disaster- you can't get a more exciting show for your money than from them. We also like Queens Of The Stone Age and ...Trail Of Dead.
Team Digital: You've got a song called "Pop Group." What's your favourite guilty pleasure pop group?
Ikara Colt: Kylie Minogue, Missy Elliott.
Team Digital: We heard the name 'Ikara Colt' comes from a fictitional racehorse, what is the most $$ you've lost on a bet?
Ikara Colt: We've lost a lot of money on this band, I mean being in any band is a bet right?
Team Digital: You've been quoted as saying most bands should quit after a only few years, what bands do you think have reached their expiry date?
Ikara Colt: Everyone! Robbie Williams, U2, REM, Oasis, Travis, Stereophonics, Madonna, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Team Digital: Rumour has it that you guys have been dissing Badly Drawn Boy, what's your beef with the boy?
Ikara Colt: Oh, Badly Drawn Boys is alright...we must have been having a bad day when someone asked us that.
Team Digital: You put on a great live show, what would you most like to overhear someone say after you've performed?
Ikara Colt: "It had its moments"
Team Digital: And it did, a lot of good ones!
