Distillers - Sing Sing Death House (Hellcat/Epitaph)

The Distillers are back in full throttle with 'Sing Sing Death House', the follow up to their 2000 self-titled effort. With aussie vocalist / guitarist Brody Armstrong, Ryan on bass and drummer Andy Outbreak tearing it up to complete the mix, this band will knock you on your ass with their raw aggression and pure dynamism, and 'ssdh' is certainly a testament to the capabilities of this three-piece powerhouse.

Lyrically, this album is mildly political, and also autobiographical for Brody, who dares you to fuck with her while she assaults your ears with a finely tuned combination of belligerent cries, throaty growls, and forceful yet melodic roars. Songs like 'sick of it all' and 'I am a revenant' are seemingly rife with memories of a shattered youth, of violence, anger, emotional alienation and drug abuse, while also possessing a sense of triumph as well, a fuck-you to any negative forces that abound.

For many, this album has a simplistic candor reminiscent of earlier punk rock, but it is simultaneously a breath of fresh air, a truly refreshing recording that is both lyrically engaging and tightly knit musically.

With this release, the Distillers are undoubtedly at the top of their game; they've crawled up from the filthy, grimy depths of the dark side, smoking cigarettes, drinking whisky, and kickin' out the jams with the force of a vicious shot in the face. While some will note the striking similarity between Brody's vocals and Courtney Love's (in her early days), there's no cheap imitation here -- the Distillers are doing their own thing, and if you don't like it, I'm sure they'd say fuck you, go listen to prince instead.
