Celtic punbk heroes release their best album ever! proclaims Kerrang! Dropkick Murphys hit the road co-headlining the Vans Warped Tour; celebrate new album "The Warrior's Code" at Fenway Park!
As DROPKICK MURPHYS geared up to hit the road as co-headliners on this summer's Vans Warped Tour, the band took the time on June 8 to celebrate the upcoming release of their new album THE WARRIOR'S CODE (out June 21 on Hellcat), dubbed "the pinnacle of battling-Mick punk polka" by the Village Voice.
DROPKICK MURPHYS led family, friends, and hometown fans from their album listening party and video premiere at the newly opened Game On! Sports Cafe inside Fenway Park to a twilight celebration atop the venerable ballyard's right field roof. Proving yet again that beneath their fighting spirit is a band uncannily adept at bringing people together -- and that the Boston Herald is dead-on in crowning the band "Boston rock icons" -- DROPKICK MURPHYS did all this with the full support of Boston's rival radio stations WAAF, WBCN, and WFNX.
DROPKICK MURPHYS charge forward with their seamless fusion of Irish and American folk, punk, and straight-ahead rock n' roll intact and sharper than ever, as noted by the UK's Kerrang!, which declares that THE WARRIOR'S CODE is "the album that will define their career, elevate them as musicians and songwriters, and set the standard for years to come," while simultaneously recognizing DROPKICK MURPHYS' place "among the world's most revered live bands."
The band's fifth full-length studio album, THE WARRIOR'S CODE both touches on familiar musical and lyrical themes -- pride, honor, camaraderie, and the MURPHYS' Boston-Irish heritage -- and stretches into new territory as DROPKICK MURPHYS take a satirical political turn on "Citizen CIA," and surprise with the single "Sunshine Highway," a song every bit as buoyant as its title.
The complexity of the DROPKICK MURPHYS' identity is apparent both in the handful of traditionals tackled on THE WARRIOR'S CODE and in the band's own songwriting -- from the humor of "Wicked Sensitive Crew" to the heartfelt expressions of friendship and loss on "Your Spirit's Alive" (written for the band's late friend Greg "Chickenman" Riley) and "The Last Letter Home" (which takes some of its lyrics from a dispatch home by a soldier and DROPKICK MURPHYS devotee who was killed on his 31st birthday while serving in Iraq).
With an album as diverse and substantial as any in the band's catalog, THE WARRIOR'S CODE dictates that victory is in the air for DROPKICK MURPHYS once again this summer. DROPKICK MURPHYS take to the main stage of this summer's Vans Warped Tour shortly before THE WARRIOR'S CODE hits the streets -- starting with the tour's kick-off in Columbus, OH on June 18 -- and continue on the annual "punk rock summer camp" throughout the summer.
