About to Pop: Motion City Soundtrack
Why They're About to Pop: Motion City Soundtrack has been on the rise since day one. Their first album, 'I Am the Movie,' won over the pop-punk crowd and landed them a near-annual spot on the Vans Warped Tour. Their quirky sound, an amalgamation of dance, pop, rock and punk, interested Blink-182's Mark Hoppus, who eventually produced MCS's sophomore record, 'Commit This to Memory.' Now, after two years of touring and writing, the Midwestern quintet is ready to release their third, most mature effort to date with a little production help from Ric Ocasek, Fountains of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger and Girls Against Boys' Eli Janney.

Three questions with Motion City Soundtrack's singer/guitarist Justin Pierre:
What's your favorite song on Even if it Kills Me?
I don't have one favorite, so I'll have to pick a song out of a hat or perhaps an empty pizza box. The lucky song this time around is 'Antonia.' Why? It's a love song about all the idiosyncrasies that make a person unique. It was easy to write because nothing had to rhyme. The hard parts were finding what lines fit well with others and having to cut certain lines due to the fact that if I had had it my way the song would have been fifteen minutes long.
If you could have any musician's career other than your own, whose would it be?
Tom Waits. He's one of the few people who have been able to experiment and explore with total disregard for convention, yet remain true to his own unique voice. It's as though his soul's been on fire since the day he was born and I hope it never goes out.
What did you think life as a musician would be like when you first started out and how does it compare to what it's really like for you now?
I thought it would suck. I wanted to make movies, but Josh wanted me to be in "his" band. I had virtually no skills other than I could kind of carry a tune so I figured "why not?" That and I am incredibly weak willed. It's taken quite some time, but I've come around a lot since 1997, and I actually enjoy this trip called Motion City Soundtrack. We've been very fortunate to have a run this long. I hope it continues, but if not ... there's always movies?
